Make That Money Girl: A Journey

My name is Erica, but feel free to call me ET. I started this blog to share my journey of financial literacy. I'm not a financial planner. I'm a novice and I'm open about that. My money management lessons and experiences do not come from an individualistic pull yourself up-by-your-bootstraps mindset suggesting that merely working hard, paying attention, and playing by the rules will be enough to get you to your financial dreams. I believe the journey to financial wealth comes with acknowledgement of your current reality, envisioning a radically different future, claiming agency, and moving yourself to action, in many instances, being bold enough to stand alone, in pursuit of a vision—being a rich boss bitch—you feel me?

This blog is not for everybody. I can promise you that and cannot apologize for that. When it comes to $$$, you need to be ruthless. Here are a few rules to start:

  • Not everyone on your team will want to go on this journey with you. Accept that. Some people are just fine with where they are. Project Pat told the world in 2001 that not everyone wants to be saved. Believe that. If you got a friend on your team waiting on a savior, she's prolly not the person who will take kindly to my advice.

  • YOLO does not mean live check to check. It means make every opportunity and every dollar count.

  • If you have someone on your team who uses the following phrases: "You got it...", "You can do...", "Can I hold onto...", "It's the 1st of the month", "Let's do it big on these hoes", DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND LET THAT PERSON GO IMMEDIATELY. I am always baffled by the amount of people who assume MY money is THEIRS...

  • Most of the things we buy are wants. And we call them needs, but they're wants. I have been driving the same car since 2008. I may WANT a nice ride but what I actually NEED is wheels that get me TO and FROM my money-making situation.

  • You can't be in debt and win. It doesn't work. That's why I'm happily driving the same yellow car I got in college. It is a blessing.

  • The most painful secret I have discovered about personal finance is that this it is not rocket science. Personal finance is about 80 percent behavior. It is only about 20 percent head knowledge.

With that said, welcome to my painfully ratchet money-making journey. You can expect a healthy amount of laughs with dead ass serious truths. I hope you enjoy it.
